St. William the Confessor, or St. William of Bourges was a French Roman Catholic prelate who served as the Archbishop of Bourges, France from 1200 until his death. He was known for practicing such austerities as abstaining from meat and wearing a hair shirt. William was especially known for his devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. He is the Patron saint of the University of Paris and of gunsmiths. He was canonized by Pope Honorius III in 1218. His Feast Day is January 10.

The inspiration for this piece came from an early engraving of St William of Bourges.

This piece is in the collection of St. William the Confessor Catholic Church in Greenville, Texas part of the Diocese of Dallas where it serves as an image of the parish's patron saint. Here is an image of the drawing behind the sanctuary.
